Biggest Upset in Tennis History?

I don't know how many of you watch tennis, but I do know that you must have heard about Rafael Nadal's astonishing loss in the French Open this year to the 23rd seeded Roger Soderling. I don't know if there was a more sure thing in sports than Rafael Nadal winning on the clay at Roland Garros (French Open). Actually I do know that there was nothing in sports that was more of a sure thing, especially in the first week of the tournament.
Nadal's first French Open came five years ago when he was 18 years old. It was then that he took out Federer in the semifinals and what people will remember as the beginning of two things. Nadal's dominance on clay and a rivalry that might have started pretty evenly, but has now become one-sided. All Rafael has done since that tournament is win every match at Roland Garros. He was 31-0 in the French Open and tied the record of most consecutive French Open titles won at four. He even had an 81 match winning streak on clay which is a record that might not ever be broken unless he himself does it. Last year's French Open was his most dominant yet. He didn't drop a single set! Then he dismantled Federer in the finals in his worst loss ever (6-1, 6-3, 6-0).
So the question that was being asked this year wasn't if Rafael Nadal would win the thing, rather how many sets would he drop along the way. Most people said anywhere from 0-3. It was assumed he would win because he never lost. He was the surest thing in sports on the highest level and you know what? I bet by this time next year he will still be a lock to win it all. So maybe the story next year will be 'will he rebound from last year's unimaginable upset?'. I know he will. In fact, it's a sure thing.

  1. just gave federer the chance to complete his grand slam with victories in all 4 major tournaments and be one step closer to eventually surpassing sampras' total...and lead to the very serious discussions that federer is the greatest mens tennis player EVER.

  3. The previous post didn't look the way I wanted it to. I meant The Gary is a closet tennis fan, not Verd.

  5. I don't think we can say Federer is the greatest tennis player ever if he is still in his prime and needs Nadal to be ousted from a grand slam to have a chance of winning it. Nadal will really end up Federer's legacy and he knows it, which is why he cried like a baby when he lost to him in the finals of this year's Australian Open.

Side note. I could beat you both. Come play me on the clay court at my gym. I'll show you whats up. Us Spaniards are dirtballers.

  6. This blog is clearly biased towards the Spainiards. To make matters worse this entire post and commentary has been a setup to promote the fact that you have a clay court in your gym. I feel dooped.
